Having seen the original, first (and beloved) and to be skeptical even Remakes with prestigious directors like Scorsese at the helm, I say that I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this new version of the classic 1962. In this version Cady (De Niro) is even more abhorrent and even violent and Bowden (Nolte) is flawed, as we have seen less than stellar defense of his Cady, his dysfunctional family life, and his dalliance with a coworker. It is interesting to note that Cady's behavior is totally contrary to his professed devotion to Scripture. Scorsese could be inferred that many openly devout Christians are really vicious monsters as Cady? The performance is excellent and is always a real pleasure in the form of cameos from Balsam, Mitchum and Peck especially as smarmy lawyer. The only reason they do not give this Cape Fear movie a perfect score is as good as it is, and remains a remake, in my opinion, while the competent completion gives a slight feeling of disappointment. But this film: Cape Fear absolutely fascinating, 8 / 10.
