"Mona Lisa Smile" is a surprisingly weak effort from Mike Newell. There is almost nothing good to say about him, except that the suits that seem authentic and Julia Stiles in hitherto-hidden fine. The dash line between a negotiated illogical, manipulative and insipid. Direction and photography is strictly by the numbers. One would have thought that the man who made "Donnie Brasco" would at least have found some interesting moments and ideas between the schlock. All very disappointing. It is hoped soon to be forgotten. As a side note, I remember that at Wellesley College a few times in early 1990. The location is shown on "MLS" was not, at least on the surface of things, in markedly different attitude to Wellesley, I visited, so perhaps the choice to set this Mona Lisa Smile movie in the 1950s was little more than a desperate attempt to make every effort seems more "serious" by the historical weight of lending to it. On the other hand, who really cares? 3 / 10
