| I enjoyed Natalie Wood, of course, incredibly talented actress attractive. Richard Beymer too ... However, all the comments I read here, just a mention of the composer of music in film, music by Leonard Bernstein ... The melodies are beautiful and romantic beyond compare. Bernstein was a genius, a great composer and conductor ... Stephen Sondheim wrote the lyrics, but the music came from Bernstein. Well known in the world of classical music as a driver who had defended a number of classical musicians, and was a powerful force in the prominent New York International and the orchestral music scene. A man of great importance in the interpretation of classical music. I suppose we could say that the world of "popular music" that will be remembered for his work here in West Side Story ... | As of now 50 years old, I first saw 'West Side Story' when I was about 7. May have been the first West Side Story film I've seen outside the home (actually in a drive-in - remember that?), And is undoubtedly the most memorable films I saw during that time of my life (although "The Wizard of Oz "and" The Music Man "are up there too). In fact, when I watch the DVD now, I recalled when asked why, I often cite as my favorite movie: West Side Story of all time. The story is hundreds of years, and now with the beginning of the drive-by shootings, threatening the community presented by the Jets and the Sharks seem a bit dated, but then there is the impressive score of Bernstein, Robbins and fabulous 'choreography, poignant songs of Sondheim as "a hand, one heart" and "I love", innovative camera work by director Robert Wise, and the unforgettable performances of Natalie Wood and the great bright Rita Moreno. I'm not old enough to have seen the Broadway play, but I saw a recent revival, and the film, including improvement in the game by moving a couple of musical numbers around so it fits better with the plot. Great DVD film West Side Story musicals are few and far between these days ( "Chicago" sold well - I could not quite cope with Richard Gere as a song and dance man) I wish there was another 'West Side Story' at the store to entertain me in the next 50 years of my life. |
| For a musical, "West Side Story" is a good movie. Living in an age where action movies are better received, I am not a big fan of musicals. I resemble a sports fan trying to appreciate the opera. But I like this West Side Story Drama film every time you see it. As a child I thought it was a great film: West Side Story ruined by the group singing and prancing around. As an adult, now see the dance moves and singing skills of the cast. And the songs are memorable. I sing the songs after watching the film. The story is compelling and the DivX film West Side Story is well cast. |
